The essay "Sex, Lies, and Advertising," wasn't very interesting to me. It was very long and somewhat redundant. I had a very hard time reading it, I found myself putting my book down often to do something else. She had a good attention grabbing title, but wasn't able to keep my attention.

I feel the same way. She has a fairly interesting topic, but I don't see the literary value of this essay except to show us to get to the point. I usually like when writers use bulleted examples like she did, but the rest of the essay was dragged out too long. I feel that she could have fit her point into half the length.

Does anyone have any idea who her audience was? At one point I thougth this was going to be an article in Ms. Magazine, but the length and style don't seem appropriate for a magazine article.

I also agree with you on this one Jenny. This essay was redundant and boring. It did not capture my attention really at all. I got bored really quickly reading it. Also on the point Amanda said i feel as though she could have written this in half the length. She seemed to be intelligent but she just did not know how to write to keep the reader entertained.

I agree with both of you! This essay almost seems like a narrative Amanda... but I'm with you - I still don’t know who the audience would be. It seems that this essay could go in a resource file for people who might want to learn specifically about how advertising affects the general population, and how people might effectively place advertisements in a magazine - but agreed, this article is definitely not magazine appropriate. Sorry for recommending this read... I thought that something with the word 'sex' in the title would be fun!

I do have to say though, that I did learn something about advertising and human psychology as it pertains to social pressure throughout this article, and how magazines feed off of this. Pg. 185 suggests there are "chains" around woman’s magazines. As if there are advertising rules to follow - is social pressure this restrained?? hmmmmm....
